Stock and Other Exchanges
This page has links to many of the world's stock and other major exchanges,
and links to other places to search. The page has had a
major rewrite in March 1997 and another rewrite in December 1997 as so
many more exchanges have come online during the last eighteen months, and
the standard of presentation has improved greatly.
- The MBendi AfroPaedia describes itself as
"Africa's electronic encyclopaedia of business and commercial information" and
includes information on
stock exchanges in Africa and information on
listed companies. The site includes
information on the following exchanges and companies listed on them:
- Africa.com's
McGregor African Stock
Exchanges Overview page
gives
searchable company information, spot price data, unit trusts and exchange
rates, as well as a link to
Investor Web which itself has
a wide range of worldwide financial sources.
- Ghana Stock
Exchange is less primitive than its compuserve URL would suggest, and it now has a
separate Official site
- The Johannesburg Stock Exchange also has
its own useful site
- The The South African Futures
Exchange (SAFEX) "is one of the younger futures exchanges of the
world and consists of a financial as well as an agricultural division"
- I'm indebteded to
Jonathan Halsey for pointing out the site of The
Bureau of Financial Analysis Network.
This site offers the greatest information resource about shares listed on the
JSE and includes a note "In an effort to promote South African investment,
all services supplied by BFA-NET (Pty) Ltd on these pages are free, unless
specifically noted otherwise"
The site includes their analysts' reports on listed companies, a free
portfolio monitoring service, company news and even a great world
and South Africa "Markets at a
Glance" page. A must!

- Lippo Securities make available a
Daily Asian Market Closing Prices services.
- Australia
- The Australian Stock Exchanges has
a helpful regional directory of Australian brokers, and well-structured
introductory information which assumes that not everyone has used the
Web extensively
- There's also an attractive site with useful information from the
Sydney Futures Exchange, although I
got bored - probably because there were too many graphics for my modem
connection to handle
- China
- The Great Web of China has investment data,
Shanghai city information, stock exchange prices, travel Information and a
searchable database of key people in commerce, government and industry.
I liked this site, although looking up stock prices is quite difficult
using the numerical codes for each company.
- Shenzhen stock exchange
- Hong Kong
- India
- Indonesia
- The Jakarta stock exchange has a
well-presented site, but a wider range of information seems to be
available at
- Indonesia NET Exchange,
a private company working with the Capital Market Society,
covering the Jakarta and Surabaya exchanges
- Japan
- Korea
- Malaysia
- New Zealand
- New Zealand Stock Exchange has
quite a good site, including the text of the listing rules (although
the navigation system makes this more useful for reference if you
know what you are looking for)
- Global Register
provides "a listing of New Zealand public companies and public
issuers of securities and unit trusts. Included are Trusts &
Mutual Funds, Securities, Financial Data, Investments, Stock Prices,
Bonds and more"
- Pakistan
- The Philippines
- Singapore
- Stock Exchange of Singapore (SES) have
what looks like an interesting site
- BT StockWatch
(Stock Exchange of Singapore at a Glance) also
looks interesting
- Singapore International Monetary
Exchange Ltd. (SIMEX)
- FISH (the Financial Interactive Services Hub) provides
market information free and live information on individual shares
on subscription. There's still a free java portfolio application that
I haven't investigated. You can also get certian information on stocks and
indices by selecting "StockInfo" which looked interesting.
- Sri Lanka
- Colombo Stock Exchange has information designed
for the foreign investor, including methods of and procedures for repatriation of capital,
as well daily share price and volume information
- Taiwan
- Taiwan Stock Exchange looked as though
it might contain useful information, but I got bored of all those graphics.
- Thailand
- The Stock Exchange of Thailand site
advises "The SET web site is here to provide foreign and domestic
investors with a detailed guide to the Stock Exchange of Thailand. It
incorporates Real Time stock information and listed Company Information
to keep you in close touch with Thailand's capital market"
The latest announcement says "All investors accessing the SET's
Internet site will have access to the following services:
Real-time data on the SET's sectoral indices.
Real-time news from all listed companies and 30 day historical trading information on each firm.
Closing price information that is updated twice a day at the end of each
morning and afternoon trading session. Investors interested in foreign stocks can
check these quotes by selecting Foreign Board"

- the FTSE International site deals with
stocks listed on the London Stock Exchange. You need to register, but
registration is free. The Member's Area provides detailed information
on the "Footsie" indices and member companies and values
(including, for example, all the various FT-SE Actuaries Indices,
but not prices of individual stocks)

Securities as published in the Financial Times and is updated at

- the London Evening
Standard publishes prices on its web site as published in its
editions, choose an edition and then select "Market Prices"
- Electronic Share Information (ESI)
is a commercial organisation that also provides this web site.
You need to register but registration is free. The free services include
closing price and volume data for all
UK listed stocks, as well as other market and index data (including the
FT-SE index updated
every minute but with a 20 minute delay)
- TrustNet provide comprehensive
information on UK investment trusts and other closed ended funds
- a relatively new service CAROL (Company
Annual Reports On Line) is a free service from March Communications
intended to provide one point access to UK and other European companies'
annual reports. When I tried it (March 1997) there were only a few
companies available (names beginning with "A" only) and
only sections of the reports appeared. It's better now (December 1997)
but still disappointing
- The Web site for the
London Stock Exchange
provides information about the
market (including the Alternative Investment Market (AIM)
and companies traded on it, including press releases
and rules updates, but does not provide real
time prices and is not a trading service

Statistics Department
page is pretty comprehensive, covering a wide range of statistical data

Searching for more?
Several of the stock exchanges have pages with links to others,
the best I found were:
Jonathan Halsey also maintains a good
Stock Exchanges
from around the World page and
IfBG also has links
to data from Stock Exchanges worldwide.
You can also search in Yahoo for any particular
Stock
Exchange or other Exchange.
FIBV (International Federation of Stock Exchanges)
has a good index with
clickable map and contact details
of most exchanges.
Federation of Euro-Asian Stock Exchanges and the
Federation of European Stock Exchanges both have
information about (but not WWW links to) their members.
Other Information
The
Holt Report provides a daily
summary of leading indices for domestic US and overseas markets, as
well as currency and precious metals prices. Holt includes a link to
the NYSE quote server with a 15-minute delay. The report seems to provide
a lot of information for the US and the major overseas indices and currencies.
The PAWWS Financial
Network provides some information to registered
subscribers (registration is free) and there's a quote
server that provides some sort of ticker, but it's very US-based
and unintuitive to use.
Stockmaster
serves "individual investors on the web with fast delayed stock and mutual fund quotes
and historical charts since 1993. All ... services are free to individual
investors". It covers US stocks only (I think) but doesn't seem to say so.
