Newspapers and Journals
There's a pretty good selection of links to other and regional papers at
Cybermart
News Online (UK). For other news sources, try:
- Reuters on
Yahoo
- FutureNet
World News is a free access news service updated at around 1.00 pm
London time each day providing UK News, World News and Sport. I found this
link in a Usenet message and it works (so far) to get you to the headlines bypassing
the (free) registration procedures, but you'll need to register to get more
- CNN Online. World news headlines updated
"fairly regularly" with a QuickTime movie of the CNN report to download
- MSNBC is another huge US site,
from NBC and Microsoft
- SuperNet,
is offering online news, weather, travel and business services at its web
site. You need to register to become a "member" but membership
is free
- Anorak is in their words "a
feisty web-rag which is updated every day at 10.30 am by a team of dedicated
early risers who love reading other people's newspapers, follow any old sport,
have obnoxious opinions, listen to old bands and do quizzes that win prizes.
If you're the same then you've come to the right place". It has all the
days' tabloid headlines.
- Crayon is a
self-customised electronic newspaper. Actually it seems to be a script
that generates a personal web page of links to news sources you select
from an extensive range offered to you through a form. You save the
resulting page on your local hard drive and when you want to read the
news, open it as a local file and select the links. When I tried it
Netscape crashed twice on page 2 of the form so I reckon I'll give
it a miss.

- The Hong Kong Standard
(http://www.hkstandard.com) is the Crown Colony's
first English language daily newspaper to go on the Net. With good
content for those who know the region, it is perhaps a little
graphically ambitious as the images are frustratingly slow to load

- The Jerusalem Post Internet
edition
- Israel's Ministry of Foreign
Affairs Home Page - The Internet web site of the Israel Foreign Ministry, established and
maintained by its Information Division, is designed to provide you with
basic information about the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, recent developments
in Israel, and a general background about various facets of Israeli
government and life.
- JCN's Jewish News provides an
index and links to Israel- and Jewish-related news online elsewhere on the
Net. If you're using a frames-capable browser, the index stays on your
screen and the page you've linked to occupies one of the frames. This seems
to work quite well
- Globes
describes itself as "Israel's Business Newspaper"
- Artificia Magazine provides
news from Israel (sound)
Return to Contents
- EMAP Online has online
editions of major titles such as Men's magazine FHM and
movie periodical Empire
- New Scientist. You need to
register, but use is free
- The Economist's experimental site
- Pathfinder/Time Warner (Time,
People, Money, Fortune ...) can be found at the Time Warner Home Page
- Private Eye Gnome Page has
lots of text and access to back issues. There's also a separate (unofficial perhaps)
Private
Eye on the Rutgers University site
- Scallywag Magazine
now has a new site in the Netherlands with access to recent issues
- Time Out net, Time Out's WWW
service including weekly updated entertainment listings from
Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Madrid, New York, Paris and Prague, most of the
critic's choice from the magazine and a pretty comprehensive guide to
London. You'll have to register, but everything is free.
- Conde Nast's Home Page.
The home page of the publisher of GQ, Vanity Fair and Tattler, amongst
others. You need to register (and download their helper software) and
it's still very slow
- c|net, the digital
offspring of a US TV show, c|net is "fresh and
interesting with articles on the familiar terrain of computer journalism from
genuinely new angles. The web site looks slicker than a gallon of
crude and an excellent shareware search engine is built into
the pages, making c|net a worthy bookmark for that feature
alone." (CD-ROM Magazine, Nov. 1995)

- NewsLink has links to
worldwide newspapers and specialist magazines from the most well known
to the Luton and Dunstable Evening News and the Socialist Worker. I liked the
new (February 1996) interface
- Select Ware
Complete News Links has many links to online newspapers and
newsletters from around the world
- Commercial News
Services (created and maintained by
Kathy
Valladares) is another index of online newspapers with some presence -
I had a feeling it was less comprehensive than some but I may be wrong
- NewsPage also has links to
specialist periodicals
- Matt Wright's Magazines
on the Net Page is devoted to more links to newspapers and periodicals
and Computer Businesses (this URL is no longer valid and I cannot find a
replacement. Can anyone
help me?)
- Cybermart
News Online has over 2,000 links to
newspaper and magazine
sites worldwide. They boast "We [h]ave over 2000 newspapers and [m]agazines online
from all over the world. (We are the largest news resource on [the] internet) ... Our goal is
to list all the online newspaper[s] and magazine[s]. "
- Electronic newsstand has a selection
of articles from many magazines and also provides a search database for
worldwide newspapers and magazines
- Another source of links to news sources is maintained at the
Sources of
News Index (in Finland)

You can access Usenet Newsgroups by Gopher: When I tried I couldn't locate a working server from the
Index of Gopher Newsreaders but one or more may
be back up if you try them.
You can also access lists of Usenet Public News Servers maintained at
For more try a
Yahoo
Search or take a look at my (non-definitive) list
derived from newsgroup messages.
For more information on Usenet newsgroups, checkout the
Usenet Info Center,
which contains pointers to many useful Usenet FAQ's and the
Newsgroups Info Center (which contains "a heritage browsable list
of the newsgroups and a way to search for a group of interest").
To read Usenet News in Netscape type
newsrc://name.of.news.server,
news://name.of.news.server/name.of.news.group or
news:name.of.news.group as the URL.
